This morning, Mom and I once again decided to descend into the bowels of the Earth and visited Lost World Caverns in Lewisburg, WV. The caverns were discovered when the landowner, who used to just dump his trash and dead cattle down the hole, sent a couple college students down to see what was down there.
Luckily for us, they created a new entrance that people can use instead of a cable ladder and prayers.
You have to descend just a little over 50 stairs.
Once you get to the bottom of that cheerful little stairway, there’s a sign explaining what you’ll see.
This is a self-guided tour, so you can go at your own pace. It is a definite workout, as there is some climbing involved over rocks and rough formed stairs. For the most part, there are hand rails. Our Fitbits gave us credit for 13 flights of stairs.
Then we came to the original entrance. Glad we don’t have to use that one.
As we were about to climb down from the platform under the hole, we came across one of the inhabitants of the cave system.
It was only 52 degrees down there, but this guy has obviously adjusted to that temperature.
I took pictures of a few more formations before we tackled the stairs again.
We greatly enjoyed our time there and enjoyed the displays they had in the gift shop. The staff was knowledgable and went out of their way to be helpful. We would recommend to visit this if you’re in the area.
